When Posting a Photo in Your Dating Profile is not an Option

From time to time I am contacted by people who are uncomfortable posting their photo for public viewing on a dating site. This is almost always related to their job: professors, teachers, or professionals with a strong presence online are examples that I have run into.

These people are hesitant to reveal exactly who they are due to having students or just having the concern that someone could Google them and find out more information than they are comfortable with (such as a home address or phone number).

For professionals with an online presence, this is especially difficult since they work hard to improve people’s ability to find them online but then don’t want this to happen when dating online.

So how can these people have success online without posting their photo? Every statistic out there states that having a photo online improves your odds dramatically. Here are some thoughts on ways to still have success:

Don’t Use a Browsing Dating Service

First, many people who contact me seem to be most familiar with Match.com or sometimes OKCupid. Both of these dating services are browsing based: you log in and can browse through any profile you want. This is what makes the professor or teacher so uncomfortable: anyone could find them online, including one of their students.

The important thing here is that browsing based dating services are not the only option. Dating services like eHarmony provide you matches and there are a few benefits in this method:

No one can browse to find you. Only the people you are matched with will see your profile.

You will only be matched with specific people and most often this will eliminate any chance of a student seeing the profile (even if they have an account).eHarmony profiles are much more generalized and tend to put you in a position where you are revealing fewer specifics about yourself (these specifics are instead discussed with your matches as you move through the communication process which is the core of how eharmony works).Here’s the most important one: only paying subscribers can see photos. So not only would the person have to be matched with you to see your photo, they would also have to be committed enough to be paying for the service.

Still, perhaps you like the browsing services and would prefer to stick with a Match.com. The only other thought I have in that case is…

Promise to Share Photos

In your profile you can prominently state that you are willing to share your photo but because of your job (or whatever) you don’t share them by default. I say this should be the very first thing in your profile as an incentive for those who read it to try to start communicating with you.

Unfortunately, that doesn’t solve the biggest problem: people will often not even open profiles without photos. So how do you get them to open your profile in the first place?

First, you can use the heading of your profile to state you have photos. You can even have fun with it with something like “Don’t skip this profile – I do have photos!”

Guys, as the ones doing much of the initial contacting, you’re actually in a good spot if you need to avoid having photos. This is because every email you send is an invitation to look at your profile. You may find that your not having a photo does very little harm if you’re willing to actively reach out to others.Ladies, even though guys are often expected to do the contacting, in this situation you should be far more willing to do the same. At the very least wink at some guys to get them to check your profile out. You’ll need to be far more proactive than normal. Good news though: my wife didn’t have a photo on her profile and I still managed to find her! So while it makes it more difficult, having no photo doesn’t make it impossible.Still, If You Can Have a Photo…

All that said, if you can have a photo it really is best. You might want to check with a friend to be sure you’re not being overly paranoid about posting a photo. Maybe you are in a position that would absolutely prohibit you from placing photos on a dating site…but honestly most conversations I have don’t seem to suggest that is frequently the case.

Still, the it’s your call to make. Just make sure that if you’re not including photos that you’re taking steps to make sure you can still have a lot of success with online dating!

I met a guy in this situation once. He was a assistant professor at a university in my city and refused to post a pic. I asked him for one and he willingly sent me one. That said…I can definitely see their point. I once saw a guy online who stated he was a professor and I thought “isnt he afraid if his student saw this?” he was young though, but after reading he seemed quite daring.

Problems with the Second Online Dating Email

A reader writes in that she was have some success with initial contacts but was struggling when moving beyond that:

Please address the SECOND email you send. I just began using Match.com and get lots of winks and have had a few first emails. But when they respond, their answers are short and not too informative or don’t seem to offer much to move things forward. More like “what do you want to know” when I haven’t asked the questions along those lines. I generally say I like the same things (I get specific), tell briefly about myself and invite them to email me back. they do but leave it brief and in my court.

To me, it’s a little odd that their responses are so short but I will say that getting contacts/winks/responses is a good thing. It seems that not getting responses at all is a much more common problem and it’s good that this situation has moved beyond that. Still, it’s an annoying problem and appreciating that you don’t have someone else’s problem isn’t going to solve it.

Here are some ideas on how to approach this situation.

Don’t Talk About Yourself at All

Honestly, normally you should talk about yourself but in this case it seems that the person either struggles to communicate or they are not interested enough (yet). One of the best ways to have someone else be interested in you is to show interest in them (this is not a new idea…Dale Carnegie was proving this worked back in the 1930s).

If you show genuine interest in wanting to learn about the other person, they are far more likely to respond. This can open the door to better conversations they will gain genuine interest in you and you’ll find yourself not having any issues in regards to having the opportunity to talk about yourself. The trick here is to find something in their profile and express a genuine interest in learning about it.

Open Ended Questions on Interests

I always found it difficult to get people to open up through email when they were already being terse. One thing you can try is finding something they are passionate about in their profile and asking them a general open-ended question about it. Try to avoid anything that could be answered easily and this might require a few minutes of research (possibly painful but helpful).

If they like fiction don’t ask what their favorite book is, ask them what series they would want to live in and why. If they’re a camping nut, don’t ask them what the best park to go camping is, ask them what their best camping experience was.

Is This a Generational Thing?

This is a wild guess but if you’re in your early 20s it might apply: you could respond in the same fashion as them.

When they write you something like “what do you want to know?” you can respond with “do you like your job?” or something else general and short. I suggest this because the current generation of young adults have grown up having these types of conversations through IM and texts. To many, this might be normal.

Now I would think most people would move to something a bit more fleshed out when dating online…but maybe not! Perhaps some of these people are looking at the dating emails exactly like instant messenger conversations? If so, run with it and see if their responses improve.

Skip the Email: Instant Messager

Speaking of instant messengers, that could be another option. If you sent them an email suggesting you chat at a specific time, maybe they would be more inclined to open up in a chat session. The fact that you receive the first response gives you so many more options than you had before. Also, if you see them online try to start a chat session and see if it goes any better.

Skip the Email: Meeting

Finally, if you’re comfortable with it you could always ask them out to have a coffee. Even if you’re a woman in this situation. I know this is traditionally the guy’s role but if you can’t get someone to open up and you’ve decided to give up on them, you have nothing to lose by throwing this out there. Challenge Them

If you’re about to give up but don’t want to jump to a first date, try this instead: find something in their profile and give them a hard time about it. For example:

I just saw in your profile you like Babylon 5…ugh! That show is such a boy show! That Spock guy is really annoying!

So here I am trying to get a response out of them just to see if it will get the conversation going. I also intentionally confuse Star Trek with Babylon 5 because this should make his responding all but guaranteed. Now if they respond with “No, that’s Star Trek” and say nothing else, it’s time to move on. A valiant effort was made but it’s going no where.

Final Thoughts

Honestly, this isn’t a question I’ve received a lot in the past. Normally if a guy contacts (or responds) to a girl they’ll try to continue to move the conversation along. Sure, every now and again I would expect you to run into a guy/girl that responds with short, one-sentence replies but I wouldn’t expect you to see this happening repeatedly. If you are seeing this repeatedly, give some of the ideas above a try and see if that helps open the conversation up.

My final thought to my reader in this case was this:

I’d say keep reminding yourself of the silver lining that you are getting all these contacts and hopefully you’ll end up talking to a guy who understands how to write an email soon!

Whoa, Baby! Men can have too anxious pregnancy,

This weekend, my husband had his first anxiety related to pregnancy dream (to my knowledge), only instead that it is on an avalanche rumblings of stinky, poopy diapers, he had a dream about driving in a van. Let me explain: in his dream, he and I are picked up for a trip to whitewater. The continuous van driving around and around and around which was apparently hours (in his dreamland), until finally, eventually returning to the hotel, where the pilot learned us that the trip was postponed to another day.

While normally I am the one who likes to analyze and dissect a dream to death for it, it seems that my husband had a handle on it. He told me that at the bottom, he believed that dream was on laminae of waiting for our upcoming twin babies already, that his subconscious was basically saying, "" Alright, let's get with this thang! "" And I realized that as much as I want that another pregnancy last a few weeks, it is in the purgatory of the pregnancy.

Of course, I ve been loving this pregnancy... well, I had been loving this pregnancy until recent weeks, since I stopped sleeping, and suddenly I'm itching all over. And we both really wanted our babies to go the distance and make it at 38 weeks, to get too large and strong and healthy as possible. I have had the kind of thought my husband was on the same page: excited, but also terrified at the prospect of impending parenthood. And it is, or at least it was. Apparently, all these nerves there early, he treated and storing some time there. Now, it is ready to get her baby Daddy game on!

Casey Anthony was not willing to be a MOM, and I was neither

When Caylee Anthony disappeared in 2008, I took the news with a sick heart coverage. I hugged my daughter old 6 a bit more strict and whispered multiple prayers of Thanksgiving for his safety. First of all, it is almost perfect - in appearance and good manners.
